Dutch company joins consortium building Egypt’s largest waste water treatment plant

EGYPT –Gakon, a Dutch based company, has been chosen to be part of a consortium of companies building the Bahr al-Baqar wastewater treatment plant, which upon completion will become the largest of its kind in Egypt.

As part of this wastewater treatment project, the company which based in Wateringen (Netherlands) will supply equipment for the installation of green houses dedicated to drying the sludge of the future wastewater treatment plant.

Gakon, a globally renown greenhouse construction company, will supply and build 16 greenhouses of 9,200 m² each.

The greenhouses will be covered with solar panels that will provide the electricity needed to dry the sludge from the wastewater treatment plant.

Gakon revealed that it will be working with Huber technologies- a German based water and sanitation company- in completing its works on the Egyptian project.

The Dutch company revealed that its German counterpart will supply the fully automated sludge feed unit with a moving floor system and the Ro8 T conveyorised units.

Huber will also take over the electrical control of the solar drying plant and, of course, the detailed process engineering.

The Bahr al-Baqar wastewater treatment plant was awarded to Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction early last year by the The Egyptian Armed Forces Engineering Authority.

The US$739 million project meanders for 106 km from the governorate of Dakahlia to Sharqia, and from the governorate of Ismailia to the governorate of Port Said.

The sanitation project is being financed by the Egyptian government through loans from the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (Fades) and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED).

Upon completion, the plant that will have a capacity of handling 5 million m3 per day of waste water, making it the largest in Egypt and one of the largest on the African continent.

The project also also aims to restore 138,600 hectares of plantation east of the Suez Canal, through the reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation.
